you set up the probelm like this...

.350/1=x/540

its means .350 is the unit rate. unit rate has a denominator of 1 always. you want to move that rate to 540 bats so now that is the denominator on the other side. you dont know how many hits he will gets so you put x. think of it and unreducing a fraction! like 1/2=4/8.

next cross muliply...

1(x)=.350(540)

you will get...

x=189

that means he got 189 hits (out of 540 bats)

you could write the answer as 189 hits

just multiply his average times his at bats so...540X0.35 (you dont need the 0 cuz you still get the same answer) is 189 hits.
Don't forget that you need to answer the question in final form as a sentance. so...The player with a .350 Average has hit 189 balls.
Lastly a ratio is pretty much like i think 2 numbers compared using a colon...i.e.: 4:12

189 hits. i did a guess and check. i started at 250 divided by 540 and got about 500. so then i got down to 190 and saw it was just a little bit above. then i did 189 divided by 540 and got .35 which equals 0.350.

baseball hits = x
at-bats= 540
average= .350

so

x/540 = .350

540x.350=189

therefore 189 hits

check

189/540=.35

whenever you see the word "ratio", think division.

so, if the batting avg (BA) is the "ratio" of hits (H) to at-bats (AB), then:

BA = H / AB

If BA = 0.350, and AB = 540, then you have the equation:

0.350 = H / 540

To solve for hits (H), you would multiply 540 to both sides of the equation.

Hope this helps!

You set it up as x divided by 540 equals .35
multiply .35 by 540 to get x
x is 189
