think of it this way: a friend is like a raincoat; they keep you from getting drenched in a storm,(meaning they help every now and then,), but a best friend is like a umbrella: they try their best to keep you from getting wet,(meaning they'll stop what they're doing to help you). good friendships may last longer than others, but nothing lasts forever.

Nope. I don't believe it does. I think a real freind won't leave you if you go broke or loose your fame or get sick or something. A strong friendship can survive many things a weak one can't. But there are things that can strain and even break them. Too many unresolved issues that build up can break them. Lives going in opposite directions, being attracted to the same person, etc. can do it too. I think only in the movies do friendships survive everything.
But I think to appreciate their fragile nature can give an increased appreciation for them. You will work harder at maintianing them if you know they CAN break. And, if and when they do break, you can properly mourn the loss of them, rather than saying, "Well, that must of been a bad freindship because it broke."

friend-Someone you can rely on and you enjoy being around them. They have their fights and some are closer than others. Sometimes fights mess up the entire relationship. You know some friends better than others, and some are just acquaintances.
Best friend- A chain that will never break no matter what. You can never truly say someone is your best friend until they have fought to the end of the earth and pulled every string to do something for you. Best buds get into fights, it happens. They bend but do not break. They must be strong for eachother, and be family.

Best friend is sometimes one you are not around that much but when you are it is great. I have had the same best friend since elementary and I am 46 now.
We lived opposite lives but connect on friendship. He married young and had four kids. I traveled the country working construction and "enjoyed" the single life.
Empathy...respect...honesty...trust.....sometimes jealousy....lol...they all are the makings of a life long friendship.
