I have a 2001 ford focus , standard transmission..
The dashboard will turn on but the engine wont run... no sound or anything.... me and my dad moved the car and he got in and did a trick and it did start that way.. So my question is... is the battery in need of a jump.. or is it the starter? i repeat there is no noise of any kind when trying to start it up... but the dashboard does light up everything. Thanks

Start with the battery, it's cheaper. But first, start with the connections it's even cheaper. I've had cars that act that way because of a poor connection. It seems that just enough power gets through to light the dash but not start the motor. By the way, whatever your dad did should be a clue to the problem.

The most draw on a battery is the starter motor. Your radio works because there is still enough power in the battery for it to operate. The heater motor, lights and wipers may also work now. Jump the battery from a vehicle that is running (positive to positive and negative to negative) it should start. If your climate is very cold you'll have the same problem again. If you have an original battery (AC Delco) in your car. it's time to replace it. They usually last 6 to 8 years in a vehicle that has never had an electrical problem

Hmm...I would think you should test the battery first. There may be a bad connection somewhere as well. Once my starter went out, but there was still sound when I tried to start it...just have the battery tested, check for loose connections...and then as a last resort, make sure the starter is okay...it's much more expensive to replace...hopefully it's something easily fixed.

The etarter is not your problem. Why is this always the answer ---it's the starter ? That's the last place to look. Clean your batttery terminals and posts, check the battery voltage--should be 13.5 volts with engine off key on. You have a voltmeter on your dash that shows battery voltage znd alternator voltage when engine is running. Most auto parts stores will chwck your battery for you. NEVER replace any part till you know the problem.

it sounds like your starter may be bad or something is interfering with your neutral safety switch. I'm leaning towards the switch. It checks that your clutch is depressed and/or the gear selector is in neutral.
If it can't tell what position the clutch is in it wont let you start the car.

A quick check on the starter is to bang it with a hammer (don't be afraid to hit it hard) while your dad has the key in the start position. It may knock some sense into the starter.

Check first the battery it might not have the sufficient voltage to start your vehicle, one way of checking it without any instrument is that, turn on the ignitions switch, activate your wiper, if it does not function the way its normal function, meaning if the wiper speed does not the same as its normal speed, then you have a weak battery.

REMEMBER THAT THE STARTER ON FORD VEHICLES WILL NEED AT LEAST 12.5 VOLTS TO START UP.

HOW OLD IS BATTERY IN YOUR VEHICLE ?????

IF THE BATTERY IS OVER 3 YEARS OLD REPLACE IT AND IF NOT THEN THE STARTER IS BAD.

first thing to do is find out battery has any charge. If you don't have a tester make sure the connections are clean and tight.
