If you dropped one big tablet of Alka-seltzer into a bowl of acid, it would take a while to dissolve, If you looked a the bubbles forming then you would see they are only forming on the outside "ring" of the tablet. If you chopped or crushed an alka-seltzer tablet up, then you would have tons of little pieces. They will be dissolved faster because they now have a greater Surface Area. This is a key term you will need to know for the future.

More surface area = Fast reactions
less surface area = slow reactions

They are dissolving at the same rate. The smaller pieces seem to disappear more quickly, but this is not the case.

increased surface area for the smaller pieces over the larger piece means that they disappear sooner.

when broken into smaller pieces, there is more area of contact with water for the reaction to take place.
