Surprisingly Liverpool city centre is quite small and compact, you can walk from the top of Bold St to the Pier Head in 15 minutes and that is probably the widest point.

There are more bars than you can shake a stick at, so it would help to know what type you like. For example there is the very up market Alma De Cuba, which is in an old church with a stunning interior but it will cost you an arm and a leg to go and they do not allow people in fancy dress, or there is the Pan American Bar at the Albert Dock if you want to do a little celebrity spotting.

The main areas for bars is Mathew Street which has traditional pubs like the White Star or The Grapes, themed Beatle bars like Rubber Soul, or the original themed Irish pub, Flannigan’s apple with three floors, each floor with a live band playing every weekend.

Another area is Concert square, which is roughly 5 minutes walk away. There are lots bars here, with outdoor areas that give quite a continental feel.

It’s the same with the Hotels, you could Book the Malmaison, which is very up market, or the Formule1 that does a late B&B for less than £40. The new themed Beatles hotel by Mathew Street should be open by July. You shouldn’t have more than a few minutes walk from your hotel to where you need to be.

If you are coming in July next year you really need to book soon, you are probably aware of the Capital of culture thing and there are lots of events happening. Of the top of my head I know that the weekend of 5th July is the end of the clipper round the world yacht race, (they are just finishing the first leg now from Liverpool to San Salvador Brazil) and later in the month is the start of the tall ships race with scores of big sailing ships, crews and tourists in the city for the week.

I hope you have a great time.

I think Neil has given you pretty much all the advice you need. I would also say that, if you manage to get hotel rooms in the City centre, don't even think about using taxis - the one way system is a nightmare and what would be a 500 yard walk can take 15 minutes in a cab and cost an arm and a leg (London style black taxis are the only ones you can flag down in the street). I'd make sure you visit Hardman Street whatever else you do - a pub called the Fly in the Loaf is good for at least one round of drinks! Concert Square in the summer is fantastic (so long as you get there early enough to bag a table) especially if you like drinking cocktails and people-watching.

Yes, neil pretty much summed it up there. I'll add one more website, which not only lists tourist attractions, but also bars and restaurants and hotels.

Hope you have a great time!:)
