TEEN DEFINITION: Quite simply, a function is just a rule which takes certain values as input values and asign to each input value exactly one output value (you must be wondering what the "F" is in input or an output value? Well, they are just a fancy name for "variables")......! My bro Jim H above my answer made a great example!

a function is just an equation like if you have y=something in terms of x then this is a function of x
its just a convenient way of naming things
y=x^2 +5 if it is in this form
is a function of x

Think of it this way - y = x^2 + 5 implies "y is a function of x". If you tell me what x is, I can tell you what y is. When x changes, y changes. The value of y depends on the value of x. Like your savings account balance is a function of how much money you make and how much you spend. If you say "x^2 + 5" is a function, that's a shorthand expression.
