1. Well during the initial scenes at the wedding of Connie, The Godfather and Tom Hagen (the consigliere) hears a lot of petitions including help his grandson to obtain a part in a movie that will revitalize his flagging career but the director refuses to cast him. The Godfather promises:"I will make him an offer he can't refuse"
2. They reject to enter in business with the heroin dealer Virgil "The Turk" Sollozzo, who is being backed by the rival Tattaglia family. Sollozo requested help of politicians, lawyers working for the Corleone, also asked for $$$ to finance the drug distribution. That descicion initiated a war between The Talttalias and the Corleone. (As known later, it was all the 5 families vs the Corleone family). Reason to refuse is to avoid loss of political favor if they enter in drug business.
3. Kill Sollozzo and a corrupt police Captain McCluskey (by Michael who upon this was considered a civilian, not a member of the business). Michael describes his plan not as a revenge: "It's not personal. It's strictly business".
4. Don Corleone negotiates peace with the other families after Sonny's death. This way Michael could return from Sicilia where he fleed after killing Sollozo.
5. Micheal assumes command of the family business and decides to make the business legal, move operations from New York to Nevada, to invest in casinos. This included buy out Moe Green which runs the casino partially financed by the Corleones. Moe refused to sell.
6. Michael order Clemenza and Tessio, two Corleone Family caporegimes to do not strike back at the Barzini Family.
7. Michael arranges the murders of Moe Greene, Philip Tattaglia, Emilio Barzini, Victor Stracci, and Carmine Cuneo, all to take place during the baptism of Connie's and Carlo's second son, for whom he will be godfather.
8. Micheal orders the assasination of Tessio, who was a traitor. Also of Carlo, husband of his sister, for his part in the assasination of Sonny.
