Try putting water in the radiator

First, have you checked the coolant level? If the coolant level is low, you could have a leak somewhere. That needs attention ASAP. It could be the water pump, core blocked or restricted, thermostat, the fan, the radiator cap not maintaining proper pressure, etc. It could really be any number of things. If you think it would be safe to drive the car to a mechanic, do that. Have the mechanic look at it, and he should be able to tell you what it is and what is required to fix it. Just don't drive it if you can avoid it...you don't wanna mess things up more than they already are. Good Luck!

whether your going to work on the car your self or have a tech do it, here's the cheapest way to go.
1 make sure your belt is tight on the water pump pulley
2 check your temp gauge with an altimeter to make sure the unit is working correctly - if not, change it - your car really isn't overheating at all. Happens with older cars from time to time.
3 change the thermostat
4 flush your system - may be a clog in the radiator, hoses, or the block itself.
5 change your water pump

Good luck!

The water pump, the thermostat, and even the radiator need to be checked and replaced if found inoperable. Consult a ASE mechanic, just don't go to the dealer.

You need your radiator checked at a RADIATOR SHOP, not an auto repair. These guessing games will cost you. Stay away from dealers, they will fix everything except the problem. Go where the problem is a RADIATOR shop.
