Definitely go with a Dell with windows XP or higher.
IMac do not have enough universal components. it will be a burden at some point.

Hi, I suggest that u get a Macintosh. Well since u r in college u probably need security for ur stuff and don't want ur system to crash. Since Macintosh's are expensive u could buy a regular laptop and install Linux on it. Linux will be way more stable and secure then Mac OS X or Microsoft Windows. Anyway the decision is up to u. I hope I helped.
Good Luck and take care!

If you're going into college, I would recommend getting an Apple laptop. Yes, they are more expensive, and anyone who says you get less for them hasn't been paying attention.
What you get for the extra money: the absolute best operating system on the market that is the most secure and stable of anything available for the average consumer (without driving yourself batty trying to figure out Linux), you get customer service that far exceeds the level of service you'll receive from any other manufacturer or retail store, and you'll get a computer that will actually last you a long time.
I bought my first Mac (a PowerMac G4) when I was in college and the thing is still running like a champ. I have the latest operating system installed on it and my computer runs faster now then the day I first bought it over 7 years ago. You couldn't even dream of running Vista on a PC that's 7 years old. Or XP for that matter.
To put things in perspective, I have the latest version of Microsoft Office on my 7 year old PowerMac and it runs better and faster than it does on my wife's 1 year old Dell. On top of that, you can download OpenOffice (which is a free version of Microsoft Office and is 100% comatible with all MS documents) from OpenOffice.org so you don't have to waste money on a Microsoft product.
Plus it has a built in webcam for chatting with your friends or video conferencing for classes. I have a lot of friends still in school that use this feature in their laptops a lot.
Bottom line, you're in college, you don't have the time to deal with any computer problems. Apple is the way to go. My 7 year old system has never given me one problem, I've never had one virus or any spyware. Within minutes of turning a WIndows based computer on and plugging it into a broadband connection (ie. university internet connection) its security is compromised.

If you are going to college, you have to get a windows based computer. Colleges almost 99% use windows and if you need to use software for a class, it will most likely be windows compatible. Plus, macs cost more for and you get less vs a windows based laptop. I recommend HP and toshiba from experience. macs are cool if you want to be different, not much else.

The #1 selling laptop in the US for college students these days is the Apple MacBook.
In fact, the latest figures show that MacBooks now command 45.8% of the US college sales market.
So much for that old theory about Mac being unpopular ...
Besides, Microsoft doesn't make computers. They just make crappy software.

If you buy a Mac now days you can add Windows to a separate partition very easily with Apple's free Bootcamp program and have both systems.
