I would only worry if this is a strenuous breathing, where it appears they are lacking air.

If you look at the side of the rib cage and see a muscle running parallel with the ground along their side, and its moving with the air, then, it might be the horse is having to work to breathe and I would have them seen by a vet.

You can hear her breathing, even if she's standing still and hasn't been running or getting her heart rate up? That spells trouble. She still might be okay for riding, but why take the chance? Definitely schedule a vet check. It will be well worth the price you pay to know if you're getting a problem that might potentially cost you thousands of dollars. You can't even have a sick horse put down without going to a lot of expense, so don't accept a free horse unless it is problem free.

ALL horse purchases should be checked by a vet before any money is exchanged. It's only logical, you'd be putting down a big chunk of money for feed/board/costs, you need to take on a healthy horse not one that will require vet care right off the bat.

Realise that there is often a reason that a horse is free. Getting her checked by a vet is probably a good idea just so you have a good idea of what you're getting into. Just think of the vet charges as the purchase price for you horse and it's pretty cheap!

you should have a vet check any horse before you get it no matter how health they seem.
