I would open a savings account for him; children that age love everything- especially blocks and pans.

A Vtech first step walker it has a little phone thing that he loves the piano to make music and he just enjoys dragging it around and discovering new corners and helps them to walk
We did get a quad bike thing (those things that the parents push along with the long handle (but they are not suitable for young children as there is no way of keeping their feet on the the foot rest and then they just get caught under the wheels)
Chunky books are good we go one of them leapfrog things and the baby wants to change the pages but ends up crushing them - he gets bored and much prefers to books with a couple of words where you make noises
If your bay goes to nursery have a word with the carers to see what they show the most interest in

Don't spend a lot of money, get him one toy and don't even make it espensive. If you on a tight buget, buy the child what he needs as far as clothes, or diapers.
Trust me, by the time grandma, and grand pa gets though with him, he will have more than enough.
Saving account, or better than that a savings bond ( you want cash that if you are in a crunch) You can get them at any bank.
Good luck and have a Merry Christmas

I honestly do not suggest toys...first of all at that age they pay more attention to the box and wrapping paper (seriously)! I am so concerned with this whole lead poisoning stuff that it makes me extremely nervouse to purchase any toys this year. I would suggest opening a savings account but it you absolutely want to buy him something to play with I would recommend books. Not only will him/her love looking at the pictures but they also adore you reading to them.

seriously...they don't need a lot. Don't feel guilty for not 'buying' a lot! Buy what he needs, a few toys and that's adequate...he'll play with the boxes anyway. Start a new li'l tradition that blends dad and mom's family stuff...

You could give him some nice large blocks- large so he can't swallow them if he puts them in his mouth (which babies do, as you've seen by now).
And for my nephew's first Christmas, I wasn't sure how big he would be. So I crocheted a brightly-colored afghan for him. He was a rather large boy.

Savings plan is a good idea. Then get clothes/toys for his size when he is 18 months old. Plan ahead.
