What I mean is, it's dark when you close your eyes. So, what's the difference in not knowing a confined room and being in one?

Ok, will try to explain this a little-from the perspective of a person who it clausterphobic. It is not a matter of light. I used to tan in a tanning bed and never had a problem. I knew that the top of the bed would lower, almost to my face but, I was fine because, my arm was free.
Last month, I just went to Six Flags and rode the roller coaster Superman-Ultimate Flight. It is a suspended coaster when you "fly" below the track, face down, arms & legs free. Once, the ride stopped, I was getting an attack because I was trapped. Even though I could move my arms and legs, my body was restricted. The same thing happened on the "Georgia Scorcher" which is a coaster that rides above the trach, but you are standing.

For me, it is not the brightness or lack of it. It is how much I can move at any given point.

Because when you are in a confined room you cannot move. When you are in the dark you are aware of where you are at and you know you are not trapped in a small area.

Being in the dark is not the same as being in a small room. The fear stems from the feeling of being closed in, and closing your eyes does not give you that feeling.

I hope I've helped.

it may have more to do with the sense of loss/lack of control. fear of being in small spaces is often helped simply by having control - e.g. driving a car vs being a passenger.
