How many times must one commit suicide before one gets prosecuted for that crime? Or is it possible that the lawmakers left out the word "attempt" when penning the law?

"We all know..." -- actually, you are incorrect.

Suicide is not illegal in America -- in fact 48 states acknowledge directly that it is not illegal -- and in the other two states, the only law the prohibits it is a couple of court decisions from the 1950s that say it should be illegal because it is against the laws of God -- which would never stand up to a constitutional challenge if those states tried to prosecute you.

Actually attempting suicide is not a crime in every state. California, for example, does not have a criminal penalty for attempting suicide

An attempt at suicide can be used as evidence that a civil committment is necessary to evaluate the person's mental state and to protect them until they are no longer in danger of harming themselves.

But that's not the same thing as prosecution for a crime.

To my knowledge, every individual who has been successful in their suicide endeavor has avoided prosecution.

On a more serious note, the law enables mental health professional to detain people who are believed to be an imminent risk to self due to mental illness or grave disability. Without that law, mental health professionals and the police would have to allow the person to carry out the suicide.

I am a social worker at a mental hospital and I think that it 's illegal so that the law can step in and force people to get help.
