I can hardly play current games with my geforce 6800xt. what gpu should i get that doesn't go into the price range of a game console, otherwise i'll just get a xbox or ps3. I would like to play games like rainbow six, gears of war, unreal tournament III, starcraft II, and call of duty. Medium settings-high should be ok. I have 22" LCD monitor at 1680x1050 so higher details are tough to come by. Here are my specs:

nforce 4 Intel edition MOBO
Pentium D 2.8ghz
Windows XP (will be vista ultimate soon)
1GB ddr2 667 pc5300 (plan to get 2 gb dual channel ram added to this don't know if it'll help)
Nvidia geforce 6800xt

I know what your going through as we have similar setups\

MY RIG:
GYGABYTE MOBO
Pentium D 2.8GHz
Windows XP PRO
2 GB DDR2 PC4200
ATI X850XT PE

The extra 1 GB of RAM will help but not fix the problem. If I were you I would decrease the resolution you play your games at as that really hurts your cards performance. Both our cards only supports SHADER MODEL 2.0 so newer games like DIRT, BIOSHOCK & CRYSIS are a no go. I bought an ATI X1600XT($42) so I can check out the demos but dont recomend buying one as full version games are more demanding. I like the X1950PRO(DX9) or maybe HD 2900PRO(DX10) once they come down in price a bit.

I would go with this one:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102706
I realize it is currently out of stock, thats because its extremely popular for its price performance ratio, I would suggest using the auto-notify. If that is too much $, go with this one:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102061 an improvement over what you have, though not as good as the first. I have nothig against nVidia, but ATI has a little better price performance in the price range you are interested in. If you are willing to up to the $400 range, then look at the 8800GTS 640MB edition.

Upgrading RAM will help, but also check out the Nvidia Geforce 7 series and early models of the 8 series (these are the cheapest). I can play Oblivion , which needs relatively high specs, on my Geforce 7300 512MB GS(or it might be GE, its one or the other). Check out newegg.com and tigerdirect.com, along with pricewatch.com for some awesome deals.

6800XT... Sounds like a decent card. You could switch to a 8800GTS though.
