I want to do pet sitting in my apartment, but need to drum up business. I do not have a license or anything, just wanted to check the amount of interest.

Yes, as long as you do not touch the mail box. You are not allowed to put anything in the mail box yourself, only the mailman.

It's alright to go door to door...however, just be aware of your apartment complex's "solicitation" policy. Most complexes have them, but they dont' enforce them which accounts for the chinese food and pizza delivery flyers you see all over the place. Also, place flyers in common areas if possible, like the work out room bulletin board if they have one. You could even try (and only if your management office folks are nice and approachable), telling them about your service. If they're friendly, they'll give you referrals since they know who among the residents are pet owners.

If you want to reach people by mail, you need to make "mail-able" flyers, get addresses, and use stamps. That's the only way to legally use the mailbox.

If you decide to go door to door, make sure you go with someone, preferably male like a boyfriend, brother, or husband.

It's illegal to put something in a mailbox that hasn't been delivered by a postal worker, but other things are all ok. You can put flyers on car windows on the street (not in private lots though) and leave a flyer attached to a door of a home. Not sure about sliding UNDER doors, but it's probably ok.

Thing is, unsolicited stuff like this usually gets ignored. I think the door to door idea is good, and it would help too to put a flyer on the bulletin board of grocery stores and any health food stores you have in your area.

Yes, and having worked for a leaflet distribution company I can tell you that despite what people say here our clients received a great response. It all depends on the product/service that you are offering and if you target the right person at the right time. Many have also received inquiries 3-4 months down the line.

I would suggest going door to door personally and handing out your card or flyer. By meeting the people personally they will get to know you and be more likely to trust you with their pet.

Good luck

hope you're not in texas because it is perfectly legal for the resident to shoot you if you're tresspassing on their property. i think this applies to some other southern states as well. think of a way to advertise directly to pet owners instead of just doing mass mailers. for example, go to the local petsmart and leave flyers.
