It is totally dependant on what kind driving you do. Is it long distance to work or two blocks away? Reliability is a tough thing to determine. If you are looking for reliable import, Honda and Toyota would be my pick. Keep in mind the cost of maintenance. Some cars are more expensive to maintain that others due to parts cost.

Don't accept an answer just because an individual car ran for a long time.
I own a Pontiac Grand AM with over 150,000 miles on it and still going strong. This doesn't mean all Pontiac's will last over 150,000 miles. My other car is a Chevrolet Malibu with over 130,000 miles on it and still going strong. This doesn't mean all Chevy's will last over 130,000 miles. It just means that my car lasted a long time. It also means the same for others who answered this question in a similar way.
I would look at cars with the best warranty. Right now General Motors and Chrysler have the best. I think it is safe to assume these vehicles are built well or these companies would go broke honoring the warranty.
Not Toyota any more. Relatively short warranty doesn't show confidence in their new products. Several recent recalls, the latest recalled nearly 500,000.

there's only two good ones that come to mind and that's a Lexus and a Nissan, those i think right now are the two best ones on the market as far as reliability and lasting real well either one of those cant be beat,Chevy has a few good ones out there right now also, those are the only ones i would consider if i was buying a new one,or used, good luck with it.

The Toyota Prius. The gas engine is only used part of the time, the brakes last practically forever, and there is no starter, alternator, transmission, power steering pump, or timing belt to worry about.

I have a Toyota (1989) with almost 300,000 miles on it, and a Nissan (2000) with about 150,000 miles on it, and they have both been great vehicles. No major mechanic bills (that were the car's fault at least!)
I would rather buy American, but I can't afford to when they build them to fall apart after the first 25,000 miles!

Its probably Honda Civic. A Honda Civic engine has never broke down before unless people revved the engine at redline for a long time. If you tell a mechanic that your civic engine died, they would not believe you and they would say it is something related to the engine, but its not the engine.
