I always give out candy. I figure if these parents and children have gone to all the effort to walk around, drive around, dress up and take the time to do that very well, then the least I can do is give them nice handouts.
I always make sure the candy I choose is individually wrapped (no candy corn or homemade goodies or natural fruits and such that could be tampered with or have bacteria on them)
I then fill up gift bags with about 5 pieces of candy each bag...say one tootsie roll sucker, a sm candy bar, a caramel, a gum and some jaw breakers all mixed up and in sealed Halloween bags.
(I found these new Halloween decorated sealable bags at the dollar store this year, FANTASTIC!!)
The kids love the filled bags, and the parents can easily see what's in the bags and determine if everthing looks good and are "keepers".
OMG! I just read Galilee's post. Right on woman. Blessings to you. See, that's what I think the spirit of any holiday is about, the need that touches you when you see it. We get some pretty tired looking parents and kids with no money or costumes but they are still trying to get a pillow case with some candy in it and I oblige with a little extra as well. And not one has failed with a sweet and mannerly "thank you and happy halloween!"

I give out candy, wrapped. But here is the real deal, every time I buy the huge size of candy, I get 1 trick or treater. I buy the small size and I get 50 kids. I can never buy the right amount. When I get too many kids, I am scraping change out of old purses. If I don't have enough kids, I take the candy to the Red Cross chapter and give it to my friends there. In the house, if it was chocolate, I would eat it.

I've always given out candy. Fruit definitely sounds better, but I remember reports of people putting razor blades in apples, etc.! I will definitely check out the cost of buying a lot of fruit for Halloween instead of candy.

I give out penny's wrapped in black net with an orange tie. I gave out apples before, but the parents throw them away because of the old razor blade scare of years gone by. I think fruit is better for the kids than candy. They get plenty of that everywhere else.

If I gave out fruit I'm sure that most of the parents would just throw it out and not allow the kids to eat it. Remember all those urban legends about the razor blades in apples? At my house, it's candy!

CANDY or the kids would leave! Halloween is special - it's a treat for kids, some kids aren't even allowed to eat candy normally, so I think it's good to give them a little treat once a year.

Giving out fruit, especially apples, has caused quite a bit of controversy in the past due to reports of razor blades in them. These controversies are largely urban legend, but still spread widely enough to give parents quite a scare. My parents never let me go trick or treating...I did it at CVS lol!
Just to play it safe, I always give out candy and make sure it's individually wrapped (hard candies, fun size Snickers, Blow Pops, individually wrapped Twizzlers, etc.). It's not only sanitary for the kiddies when they decide to trade goodies with their friends, but it gives parents peace of mind as well. Happy Halloween to ya!

Every year I decorate the porch with all sorts of decorations and singing witches and etc. And every year nobody comes. Perhaps one child. I give out big candy bars not the bite sized stuff then I wind up eating it all myself and start putting on holiday weight that I have to take off in January.
Oh well. Have a happy Halloween.

We have been spending $30 on candy for each Halloween. We get the good bags of candy so that if there are left overs we have something to nibble on. But... this year... our lights are going to be off and the $30 is going to be used for the gas bill! Plus... there will be no candy to go to my thighs!!!
