why was Joseph Stansbury a british spy?

Stansbury was born in London and opposed the Revolution. He was a villain but spy may have been a stretch. He helped Benedict Arnold turn traitor and was forced to moved to Canada. He was eventually allowed to return. He was never tried but was an unpopular figure. He may also have falsely accused Alexander Hamilton of being a spy.
