Mothman is the name given to a strange creature reported in the Charleston and Point Pleasant areas of West Virginia between November 1966 and December 1967. The creature was sporadically reported to be seen before and after those dates, with some sightings as recent as September of 2007. Most observers describe the Mothman as a winged man-sized creature with large reflective red eyes and large moth like wings. It often appeared to have no head, with its eyes set into its chest. A number of hypotheses have been presented to explain eyewitness accounts, ranging from misidentification and coincidence to paranormal phenomena and conspiracy theories.
One of the early theories is that the Mothman was a misidentified sandhill Crane, which in the late 60's had been a problem in surrounding regions. Sandhill cranes reach a height of 6 feet, achieve wingspans of 10 feet, have the general appearance described, glide for long distances without flapping, and have an unusual shriek. Other recent theories suggest the possibility of the Mothman being a barn owl, an albino owl, or perhaps a large Snowy Owl (based on artist's impressions of the mysterious, flying animal). Skeptics suggest that the Mothman's glowing eyes are actually red eye caused from the reflection of light, from flashlights, or other light sources witnesses may have had with them. Another theory is that large birds were brought into Pt. Pleasant to provide a convenient excuse for why people were seeing Garudas.

The book, "The Mothman Prophecies" was written by John Keel, who investigated the phenomenon at Pt. Pleasant. Believe me, the movie is nothing like the book - it is a good thriller, but nothing to get information on. John Keel wrote other books about the UFO phemonenon also, all very readable.

There is supposed to be an alien race called Dracos. That makes me think of a dragon, so the Mothman might be Dracos, since they are supposed to actually have bat-like wings.

Scary, very scary movie. Really Mothman prophecy I think is more of the phsychological breakdown that occurs to Richard Gere's character after he loses his wife. I think he obsessed about discovering WHY she died and he becomes mentally unstable "seeing things" and the like.
Gere's character is just experiencing what happens when people lose their faith in god and that things happen for a reason and he becomes to obessessed with the science behind why she died.
