I am a Robert and my father and my wife's father are also Roberts. My grandfathers were John and James and my wife's grandfathers were Joseph and John. We are expecting a boy and I thought it would be cool if we named him Robert J, with the J not standing for anything specific. Obviously it has a significance, but no real name attached to it. My wife is on the fence about having a middle initial that does not stand for anything. So now I am looking for the opinions from the general public.

Your thoughts?

What about Robert Jay? That way you're still using the J but have something to go with it....
But I think Robert J is kinda cool......he will drive people crazy when he gets older because nobody will believe its just J. Being a little different and unique is a good thing.

I do not like it just Robert J. the J looks like it needs something, and it looks like what you see on forms. The only acceptable way is to have Jay, which is a cool name even without significance. I would say to Robert Jay ____ (last name)

You can use your middle name on your application because it's not considered a legal document. Then, when you're called in for an interview, that's the time to inform them of your real name. Just tell them you don't like your first name. They'll need your legal name though, in order to conduct background checks and contact references...but they aren't going to do that unless and until you've already had your interview and they are considering your for the job anyway. Your goal is to get that interview.

How about using the name Jay instead, that way your son has a real middle name that honors all the men in both your families. I think a middle initial without a name is kind of silly.

You would not be the first to do that!

Harry S Truman's (the president) parents gave him the inital S to satisfy both grandfathers. One was Solomon and the other was something else I can't remember with an S.

I think that that is kind of cool, and it would honor all the appropriate people.... and you would be in good company! :)

My cousin is called Robert M (for similar reasons to your situation) and to be honest no one really takes any notice. I mean sometimes people get a bit confused when they ask his middle name, but it's no real hassle and he certainly doesn't get annoyed by it. I like the Jay suggestion, or you could name him J and maybe he could choose when he's older?

But I like it it's quite unique.

I had a friend in high school that's name was Joseph B. we called him Joe but it was kinda neat that he had just a middle initial, it was like his mom didn't conform to the usual baby naming stuff. But it's kinda different. good luck!

I knew a couple of people with middle initals like that. I always thought it was kinda odd, but cool in a way.

I'm not too keen on that, but since there is a "John" on both your side and your wife's, I would use that as your baby's middle name.
