WWII. It killed perhaps close to 100million people. Nothing else can come close. Twelve million in the death camps alone, Jew, Gypsies, Slavs, mentally challenged, on and on.
Russia lost 10's of millions. The money the USA spent on that war would be close to 3 trillion dollars adjusted for inflation.

In terms of overall casualties, WW-II with approx 59 million dead, though the figures range from 40 to 71 million, 59 million is the figure generally accepted by most historians.

In terms of battle conditions, WW-I by a country mile. Battle conditions were appalling and it still rates as the war with the greatest single loss of life in a single day of military campaigning. The 1st Aug 1916 saw the British forces launch the summer offensive of the second battle of the Somme, some 57,470 casualties of which 19,240 lost their lives by the end of the first day! (That's almost 8% of the total miliatry deaths in the US civil war, in one day).

The first World War claimed between 30 million and 119 million deaths depending on the source and if you include the deaths that occured at the end of the war from the outbreak of Spanish Flu.

The American civil war saw 212,948 military deaths and approx 625,000 deaths in total.

the holocaust
the rape of nanking
the Japanese atomic bombing (seriously i am still not over this one yet; the worst crime in humanity in my opinion)

think of all the mothers that lost thrie son/daughters
all the lovers that lost their soul mates
yeah not a good thought
and u kn whats the funny part
even after all that we have not learned our lessons
and are leaning towards a verge of another world war (think of all the potential consequences with the nuclear weapons)

The First World War as it was a completely pointless and avoidable conflict that changed the course of history forever and of course was one of the prime reasons behind the rise of Hitler and thus WWII.
