I have a NEC flatscreen LCD monitor. It has greasy fingerprints on it. What is the best way to clean it without doing any damage to the screen?

Do NOT use:

Tissues - they will break up and leave fibers on the screen.

Paper towels - they are abrasive.

Dish detergent - this too is abrasive.

Use a soft cloth (cotton or microfiber) dampened with a little water (bottled water if you live in a hard water area) If you need a bit more cleaning power use a soft soap solution, such as a plain liquid hand soap.

Any sprays or wipes specifically meant to clean monitor screens or eyeglasses will work too. Just don't let any liquid run down the screen. Water and electronics do not mix well.

I have seen monitor screens totally trashed because they were cleaned with Windex and paper towels.

The simplest solution is to slightly dampen a paper towel with water. Ring it to be certain it doesn't drip any water. Then wipe off the smudges gently. The small amount of water that gets on the screen tends to evaporate quickly with the heat of the LCD. It won't leave behind any residue and it works great!

I would be cautious about using any cleaners as they might be caustic or abrasive.

Use a soft, damp, clean cloth with just 1 dropof washing up liquid on it. Rub the screen gently and then polish dry with a second clean dry soft cloth.

Do not use anything with either alcohol or ammonia in it.
