No you do not need it.

Do you want it? It depends on how risk adverse you are.

The companies make money selling you an extended warranty. The big failure times of electronics is in the first month or two, or at the end of it's life - typically 5+ years. So getting that warranty that covers year two and three is covering the most reliable part of the equipment's life. The companies price the extended warranty such that they will receive more money selling it than they will pay out fixing stuff that fails.

However, things can fail at any time. They can be very expensive to fix. You are paying a known amount up front to remove the worry that you might have to pay a lot more later. On average the consumer loses money, but is willing to pay for peace of mind.

So, do you feel lucky?

Do you 'need' it? no.

If you can afford it is it smart to get it? yes.

You never know what could go wrong, especially if it's a new expansive TV as well, my finance's parents just spent over a grand repairing color tubes on their SONY HDTV because they didn't get the warrenty;

go figure.

It wouldn't hurt. It is just a good idea incase something would happen to it. I would to just be on the safe side.
