Was he the first signer, or was Button Gwinnett, the name on the top left hand side, the first to sign it?

On May 24, 1775, John Hancock was elected the President of the Second Continental Congress. He would serve until October 30, 1777.
Declaration of Independence was July 4th, 1776.

Because when people are asking you to sign your name on something and say "I need your John Hancock" sounds alot better than saying "I need your Francis Lightfoot Lee"...
