I'm a Habs fan. I dislike the Leafs, but I have nothing against their fans.
I grew up in Ontario. If I hated Leafs fans, I really wouldn't have had many friends as a kid. It's an intense rivalry, but I think you're overestimating the personal side of it.

English Vs. French, and the Habs played a fire wagon sort of style hockey, showing off and playing hockey with the best players ever (Rocket Richard, Jean Beliveau, Toe Blake) and the Leafs were exactly different. They were English, and played hard nosed defense with more team players (Teeder Kennedy, Syl Apps, Dave Keon) Also, the games between them were often bloody on the ice and in the stands. Its like the Red Sox and the Yankees of today, but except Leafs and Canadians won much more championships (habs 24 cups, leafs 13). Also, the only way to beat the Habs back them was to basically beat them, and Conn Smythe's quote "If you can't beat them in the alley, you can't beat them on the ice." This summed up how and why Leafs vs Habs makes for the best hockey in the world.

For a million reasons. First, they are both Canadian teams. Second: they have both been around for longer then most of us have been alive (both teams are part of the original 6). Third: Both teams are in the same division, meaning they end up playing each other 8 times a year. Teams play each other, they are going to develop a rivalry, and when that happens, the fans are exactly real chummy with each other. I could go on forever, but I think my point has been made.
On a side note on that last one: look at the other teams in that division and it will also help point it out. Look at the Sabres and the Leafs, or the Leafs and the Sens, or the Sabres and the Sens. They all are great match ups, and the fans hate each other like there's no tomorrow. Hope this helps paint the picture a little better for ya.

What age are you? Do you know much about NHL hockey? History? Can you give an example of an incident that lead you to ask this question?
Sorry, don't mean to answer a question with a question but this one requires A LOT of time and thought.

Anglo-Franco, both Canadian teams. TO is largest market, but Habs dominated for decades.
