My son has just started an apprenticeship and earns £100 pounds a week for doing 35+ (he is 16 years old and just left school) I feel it unfair that at 16 he has to pay for his own prescriptions, his own trainting costs ( He is with a training agency called Smart ) I also take money from him for his keep (just £20 a week) as we have lost his Family allowance and if he stayed on at school or college he would have got EMA! A lot of his friends are better of than him who are still at school as they have Family allowance and some get EMA and have part time jobs, is it me or is this just unfair I know it was his choice to do the apprenticeship but I feel the govement are not backing things like this up Remember he is only 16 and having to pay for his prescricptions!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What's a trainting cost? Yes, the government should pay for everything. That's what government is there for.

It may be that the government is trying to discourage young people from school too early. I find it interesting that you would take money from him yourself, but complain that the government does so. If your son has prescription costs which exceed 100 pounds weekly, is there some sort of hardship allowance that he could apply for? Remember that if he went to college or university, he would not be earning that money at all, and once he finished school, the costs of college would be very high. By the time your son is 20, he will have a career, while those who went on to college or university will still be paying tuition.
