So they do one thing and say another? That is called lying.

It goes back to Reagan. Before Reagan, conservatives were all about fiscal responsibility. They believed the country should be run like a business, the budget should be balanced either through less spending or more taxes or some combination thereof.
Reagan put a new face on conservatism. His idea was that we could balance the budget by MORE spending and LESS taxes. Not surprisingly, I guess, this was very popular with some people, like one of those fad diets where you lose all the weight you want by eating only chocolate, sticks of butter, and Mexican food.
Of course, not surprisingly at all, the plan was a spectacular failure. But you know how it is with -belief-, people don't want to be confused by facts. Well into his second term, after tripling the entire national debt, Reagan was still insisting that his tax cuts would raise revenues enough to balance the budget!
Spending is what gives politicians their power. Cutting taxes is easy, cutting spending is hard. So Republicans keep spending as if debt just didn't matter. They will be out of office before the bill comes due, and when the bad consequences do arrive, they will blame them on 'liberals'.

Payback is so much fun. Democrats (especially the liberal ones) had been doing that for decades. Why shouldn't conservative have their turn.
The difference is Democrats want to have more taxes so they can squander more money on "special interests" programs that do little or nothing constructive.

I can't think of a time when tax dollars were spent efficiently (not 'squandered'), and the republican-controlled congress did cut taxes early in the Bush years, and revenues have risen in spite of that. But, war spending, and irresponsible spending in general exceeded revenue increases, resulting in a high deficit.
So, if you assume they had any idea what they were doing (bet of a stretch), the answer would be: because they like borrowing money.

I'm not sure there is evidence to support your argument here and I don't like conservatives generally.
The rich don't think they need to pay for anything because they are blessed with everything. That is the attitude of a lot of them and one reason they are rich because they don't pay!
If some do pay, it's peanuts to what they have and makes not a drop. They don't like the idea of it. It's icky to them. This is my guesstimation based on my own experience living in Massachusetts and having spent time down south.
Bush is squandering our money, giving our money to his friends through contracts. It's driven by fear. There is no reason to attack Iran. The thought of the US attacking Iran horrifies me. It could possibly bankrupt us or do serious harm to our already very vulnerable economy. I don't buy what is happening in the markets because we have a lot of rich people that have nothing else to do with their money but play the stock market. (My dad plays it. He is currently unemployed and due soon to retire.) The baby boomers have the most resources and don't care about other people.

Well that's the thing they spend more and more money, while calling for smaller government and calling the Democrats "tax and spend liberals" except all they do is leave off the tax part and run up huge deficits.

Well if the government would lower the taxes and get rid of the IRS then they wouldn't have so much to squander.

Because they keep thinking if they act like Democrats the Democrats will give them some sort of credit.
It never happens, they compromise there principles and the Democrats get the credit and Republicans are still pariah's.
They should fall back on there principles and quit trying to gain favor.
