So they don't miss important information that might be on a test/quiz. And some teachers mark people off if they are absent a lot, and it might affect your final grade.

First of all, you paid for it. It was apparently something you wanted. So missing class would be like buying expensive things and then not using them, a waste of money.
Secondly, many students who miss class then will not accept responsibility for their own behavior. They rely on others to lend them notes, insist on the professor providing slides of the class and explaining them (essentially repeating the lecture a second time, just for them), or they complain when they do poorly on exams or papers because they didn't incorporate the material which they missed.
Thirdly, unless the class is a pure lecture, many classes depend upon discussion, group work, and the like to accomplish their learning goals. If you aren't there, you are harming not only yourself, but the class as a whole.

A lot happens in class. The prof may answer a question from another student that gives you a new perspective or tunes you in to something you didn't know you were missing. Class is the place to ask questions or raise issues with the teaching materials or readings. If you do need to see a prof or TA during their office hours they are going to be much more willing to help you if they know you have shown up to class.
Also, your presence matters. Profs want to see you and interact with your ideas. They want you to raise questions and engage in discussions. Even in big lecture classes, profs want to be talking to living, breathing people with opinions of their own.
And you're not getting your money's worth if you skip class.

So that you do not get behind in your work. It only takes one miss in some cases to be a week behind the other students. Also, it does affect your final grade. They have been getting strict about absences in college bc of the high number of students who end up dropping out and not returning and most of those students are the ones who were absent frequently. Mature people who are there to learn and who are serious about their education and grades will not skip out on classes. In my college, you are only allowed 3 absences before you get kicked out of the class...this is for classes that meet 3 times a week. For classes that meet 1 time a week, you are only allowed one absence, and can be kicked out if your instructor wishes to do so just from that one absence. You are there to learn and the instructors are there to teach you, and neither objective can be reached if you are not in class.

because most schools have an attendance policy that some professors strictly follow. if a student misses more than the allowed number of absences, they student will be dropped and lose credit and money. also, many professors give information that may not be in the textbook but will be on the test.

College classes often cover more vital information compared to high school classes. If you want to do well in a course you need to hear the professor's lectures and ask questions. Professors also tend to give only a few days to prepare for a test and if you're not in class you will be underprepared.
