Well, you should definitely spend some time at the Santa Cruz Boardwalk -- it's tons of fun, even if you're not a theme park kind of person. (If nothing else, it's just a fun place to walk, and to see the ocean). Here's a link: http://www.beachboardwalk.com/

For some more ideas, check out IgoUgo.com's Santa Cruz page, which has reviews of pretty much anything you'd want to do in Santa Cruz (and surrounding areas.) http://www.igougo.com/attractions-l1216-things_to_do_in_Santa_Cruz.html

Since you're only there for a day, I'd give the boardwalk top priority, and then find a great restaurant for lunch or dinner. The ocean will most likely be way too cold for swimming, but you could always paddle or take a long stroll across the sand.

Good luck -- Santa Cruz is a ton of fun!

The Boardwalk is overrated. Visit Downtown Santa Cruz. I believe Center Street is the main street, but I may be mistaken. That's where you'll see a cross section of Santa Cruz residents and tourists. Plenty of places for dinner. You should easily have time to stop by the Boardwalk and beach as well.

Get there early and Zachary's is the place to be for breakfast. It's on the Pacific Ave mall. Cheap and fast.

Tacos Moreno's for lunch. Great quesadillas (kind of like lightly fried bean tacos). Al pastor burritos are great too.

If you have dogs, It's beach is near the Lighthouse and it's legal, off leash in the morning and evenings.

Do you like Blues music? Moe's Alley is the place. Otherwise, the Catalyst on the Pacific Ave Mall has the best chance of a good show.

If you like beer, the Seabright Brewery is a great place during the day. They've got a great patio with some really good beer.

Wilder's Ranch has a great singletrack for mountain bikers, and De Laveaga Park has a world class disc golf course.

There are some great wineries where you can go wine tasting. Some are located in the town of Santa Cruz while others are located in the nearby Santa Cruz mountains. For info on specific wineries and links to their sites, visit: http://www.cheers2wine.com

They have a world class frisbee disc golf course in Santa Cruz if that is your thing. It is free and all you need is the frisbees. Plus The Beachboard walk is my favorite place in the world. Honestly they have a lot of thing s to do there. They have the Mystery Spot place if you like that sort of thing with balls that roll uphills and stuff. Can't forget about Margaritaville if you and the lady want to drink and eat.
