Depends on what, exactly is on your record, what the job entails, and also depends on the company's specific hiring practices.

A close friend of mine committed a felony about 15 years ago (drug-related) and will probably NEVER be able to hold certain positions, such as in a school, bank, or a government position.

Also, check the wording on employment applications... it may ask if you've EVER, or in the past 5 years or 10 years, committed certain crimes. This is a pretty good indication of how far back they intend to go on the background check. Some places of employment will check your entire criminal history, but I think they usually go back about 7 years.

A background check usually goes to any criminal acts that were committed. Any employer can use this to refuse to hire an employee. Many jobs, even menial ones, require bonding by the employer.

A private business may turn you down if they believe that your conviction(s) are dangerous to the business or customers. So, yes you can be turned down that is why they are allowed to ask you about your convictions and do background checks. The background check will reveal anything that is on record as far as convictions and incarceration are concerned, so theoretically it could go back as far as your conviction.
