After we installed the new single oven & range the nasty wall behind it still shows. It looks like someone had tile there at one point and simply ripped it out before installing the old, giant double oven that we just replaced. What can I put on that wall that will be easy to clean? Should I just sand & paint? Would I need a pro to install tile? Is there a website that deals with all of this?

Sanding and painting would be fine, but if you have the time/money, tile would be quite nice and would be much easier to clean.

Unless you're a handy DIY-er, I would recommend hiring a professional.

Here's a DIY for tile installation:

It's amazing what a coat of paint will do to hide or cover an old wall. And if you don't want to go to the trouble of sanding the wall, you can add sand to the paint for texture. But I wouldn't recommend this if it is over a stove. It will be too hard to keep clean. Make sure you use a durable paint that will hold up to cleaning.

No question patch / sand/ paint is the easiest. Many homes have ovens against painted drywall. Certainly there are probably dozens of options, but none strictly neccesary on any critical level. All you're interested in at this point is aesthetics I assume.

I agree with John Himself ,stainless steel ,or I was going to suggest copper, you can get the copper at most any roofing company ,if they carry the size you need ,,,as for the stainless steel you can bye that at a restaurant supply company, I think it would look great, and easy to clean...
