What is the cheapest and easiest way to install vents. Is it really a big deal that the sewage is not vented. The sewage does not go into a city sewage system. I have a septic tank.

Drainage systems need air to operate correctly. The vent pipe(s) are where they obtain the air. Without a vent, the traps on all fixtures can be sucked dry each time another fixture is used. This allows sewer gas to enter the home. Sewer gas contains Methane which is very dangerous. Without vents, each time you use a fixture, another fixture will produce bubbles as the air is sucked out. Please get it fixed. It is obvious that you did not get a Home Inspection done before buying.

It's not a disaster, but it will function better with a vent. To add one you need to cut into the soil stack and install a fitting and plastic pipe that goes up and outdoors so the gases can escape and the pressure equalizes. Don't you have any glug glug sounds in other drains when your pipes drain from the sink or toilet?

Are you sure there are no vents??? Not sure why someone that remodeled a house would take out the vents. Look on your roof...see if you have stand pipes coming out up over or near bathroom and kitchen area....if so...those are vent pipes.

If they did take them out...it could be a lot of trouble putting them in unless you have access to walls near the drains.

In most places, repairs done by the owner do not require permits. What you should have done was have your home inspected by a professional before you purchased it. The chances of you recovering any liability from the previous owner at this point are somewhere between slim and none.
