People can't hear me as well as they used to when I talk on my cell phone. In fact they can hear me better on speaker. Is there a way to clean the "hole" where the microphone is without damaging the phone? Or do I have another problem?

You could have another problem, but the best thing to try is to use a can of compressed air or an air compressor with a blowing attachment to clear any dust and debris that might be in there. If that does not work, it is likely a problem with the phone.

I'm guessing it's another problem if they can hear you on the speaker phone the microphone should be fine. But it wouldn't hurt to try an clean it. Try using a Q-tip.
