What did Medieval/Renaissance people wear for underwear under their chemises(If dress required a chemise)?
(I am afraid my chemise may be see-thru because it is white, and I don't want to do the britney spears thing with no underwear.)
I have never been to a Ren Faire before, but it sounds like fun, so I plan to go to a local one this summer and I want to be as historically accurate as possible. So can you help me please?

They did not wear underwear. A chemise is a slip then there is the overdress. So the chemise is not see thru. Panties and Bras had not been invented yet. It was very airy down there

The very rich women might have silk for a chemise worn under their dresses. Less wealthy women would probably have linen.
Cotton was known in India (Pakistan) and Egypt, but little would have been seen in Europe before the Crusades.
If you can find something linen, you will probably be close, but silk would be OK if you are a lady of wealth and position.
Forget panties and bras - they did not exist.
(But I doubt anyone would know if you chose to be "modern" underneath for comfort.)
Take a look at the sites below. 'Should be fun for you to look into.

I'm not sure, but if you go to a fabric store (JoAnn's Fabrics, here in Oho), look in the pattern books under historical costumes, and you can get all kinds of information!! I made our own costumes! The medieval faire is a lot of fun!! Can't wait to go back next year.
