Pork, at least Irving is in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex. New Jersey and New York are 2 seperate states!
The Giants used to play in New York until 1973 when they were forced out of Yankee Stadium and actually played in Connecticut (Yale University) until 1975 when they returned to New York and played at Shea Stadium. In 1976 they moved the team to the Meadowlands in New Jersey. It's only one tunnel away from New York. I guess they never changed the name of the team because of it's long history in New York.

It's not like they are far away. Giants Stadium is about 5-10 minutes outside the city and you can see the NY skyline from 25 miles in any direction.
I grew up in the area and since I'm a Jersey boy, in my head, they always have been and always will be the New Jersey Giants.
And to respond to the dude asking about the Redskins, they play in Landover, Maryland about 20 - 30 minutes outside of DC.

It seems like a really valid question considering New Jersey is an actual state and the cities in which the other teams actually do play are suburbs of the cities by which the teams are named. It makes sense to name a team after the major cities, but to name the team after the state over the border is kind of silly really. The St. Louis Rams are right over the river from Illinois, but they didn't name them after Illinois or a city in Illinois.

Eric B - I live in Staten Island, we are sinking as it is. No Stadiums needed. There is no way you can fit another stadium in NYC we are congested as it is. Anywhere there is woods is being bulldozed for more houses. I believe there are five million people In NY, imagine all the tourists that would come in just to see the Jets or Giants play? not to mention all the tourist we get alone. Im not even sure how prepared we are for the new brooklyn nets stadium. I here there is no parking near the stadium, Id like to see how this will turn out. In other word, I can't see any football stadium in NYC. But hey, there is always Long Island..!

It's pretty common to not play in the same city as your team name would state. Like the first guy said, the Cowboys aren't in Dallas, Buffalo plays in Orchard Park, and the Lions only recently moved back to Detroit from Pontiac.
I know it's odd that they're actually in a different state, but that's only because of the proximity between NJ-NY.

The NY metro area consists of NY City, North east Jersey and Southern CT. 90% of people that work in NY live in NJ, it may be 2 different states, but NY city is home to all "Jersians"

Because Jon Bon Jovi is the sole owner of the phrase "New Jersey" and he is not a fan of Ely Manning.

Because NY wanted a football team but they didn't have the room. And NJ offered to let them use there land. Anyways NJ is the dumping zone for NY.
