I am kinda naive. How much would it cost to do all of this, you know rent, food, gas, utilities and a little fun? I will be going to IPFW (In Indiana). Is it better to live in a dorm or get an apartment? Is there a site that I can go to to help me, or can you help me? Any and I repeat any advice is good and helpful to me!
Thank you so much!

I know that schools in the US are way more expensive than here in Canada but I paid about $4,000.00/year for tuition. I was also paying about $500/month in rent (I never did go to residence because it was actually more expensive and I wanted to do well in school since I paid for it myself - residence is a big party place).. Anyway, utilities were about 50$/month for electricity and 60$/month for phone. Heat and water were included in my rent. I had to work every summer and during the year for some semesters. It was hard but it was wonderful to get out on my own and live life my way. I had roommates for the first 5 years after moving out so the rent was actually cheaper than 500$/month. I suggest looking in the local newspaper to see what rents are around the IPFW campus (they might have a classifieds section online that you can look at, or use google search to look for rental sites in the city. If you can live in a house with a couple of roommates, it's usually cheaper. Also, look for a place that covers utilities (although most don't cover phone bills). Another thing that I did when I went for my undergrad degree, and my masters, was lived near the university so I could bike to school during the snow-free months and walk to school during the winter. It saved quite a bit in commuting costs (I got rid of my car because it was expensive to own).

Don't forget to look into getting scholarships and bursaries! They will help quite a bit, no matter how much they are. University Books are really expensive so even 500$ helps!

Another thing, if you can do it without taking student loans - try not to. I didn't take loans for any of my degrees (and I paid for two by myself) and am so thankful I didn't because everyone that did are still paying them off, years later. If you have to, of course you have to!

Hope that helps!!

Strangely, (and I have never seen another school do this) IPFW does not have any tuition or other costs listed on their website. They just tell you that they will tell you what it costs if you go there and help you figure out how to pay for it. Not very helpful, if you ask me! So instead, I went onto the College Board's website (www.collegeboard.com), and it was much more helpful. I copied the following directly from their site:

Tuition is $6,312 for Indiana residents, $14,666 for non-residents.

Other costs, if you are living on campus (not including food, though) are $9,864.

They have figured costs of living off campus (including food) as $12,346. A lot of schools won't let you live off campus as a freshman, unless you live at home with your family, but that doesn't seem to be the case here.

I guess that as far as where to live goes, if only cost matters, you have to decide if you will eat more than $2482/year! Actually, I would recommend living on campus, especially your first year. There is enough to worry about without dealing with problem landlords and worrying if you forgot to pay the electric bill.

Look into the local listings for what apartments go for in the area you're thinking of moving. Living on campus varies but usually is around $10,000 per semester.
