You may as well setup networking between your pcs so that you can share a number of things... this is completely safe as long as your router is configured correctly.

First for your XP Machine to see the Vista Laptop and vice versa you need to download an update. This update needs to be installed on the XP machine and is from Microsoft.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/922120 Once there click 'Download the windows xp package now'

Install the update on the XP machine and then follow these instructions

XP Machine
Go to the control panel
Click Network Connections/Network and Internet Connections (depeding on the view of your control panel)
Click Set up a home or small office network
Follow the instructions on setting up a network
The main thing you need to remember is your workgroup name and to enable file/printer sharing

Vista Machine
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/76174f4a-7522-425a-9424-324dd299265e1033.mspx#EFE
Follow the instructions on that site to setup home networking on your vista machine, make sure you read the 'enable sharing on your network' part.

Then you can simpley put your documents in the "my shared documents" folder. Open my network places on the xp start bar and then click on the computer name of the laptop you will then be able to see the documents you have just shared.

Create a sharing folder on your laptop and make sure both computers are on the same network (using the same connection).
OR Write the items to a pen drive.
Or Email them to yourself.
