Mac OS X supports all USB printers. This article may be of interest to you http://www.index-site.com/printersx.html

When you say "Out of the box" do you mean when the Mac comes out of the box? On the hard drive: Library > Printers. Then look in the folder for each brand.

Do you mean when the printer comes out of the box? Virtually every USB or laser printer made in the last 5 years has OS X drivers. In the box for the printer will be a CD with the software for the printer. That will be either the same as or newer than the software that installed with Mac OS X so install from that CD if you don't want to download the latest from the Web.

Either way, your best software for any printer should be the latest one listed for download on the printer brand's Web site. For my printer, even though OS X includes software for it, I always download the software from the Epson site and check every six months for a newer version.
