there are many kinds of benefits such as
death benefit, disability benefit, benefit to children when parents die and retirement benefits. they may have different requirements. I do know that you have to have "40 quarters" of paying INTO social security (paying the tax). Which usually means about 10 years of working before you are eligible for retirement benefits.
