the wood stove was not lit today, but i might need it tonight . it sounds like it has sharp long claws, and it is very mad.
the stove pipe is 20' feet high, so i dont know what can climb 20' of stainless steel. im afraid it might be bigger then me. or maybe a demon from hell.
should i just open the front door, then the stove door, and hope the sooty little darling finds his way out? or light the stove and take a chance that a sooty, flaming, flying critter will shoot out of the chimney , land on my neighbors house, burn it down, then i will be arressted for arson? or should i just sell the
house ?

update - there is no way it is a cat or any animal bigger then a squirrel, this is a wood stove, not a fireplace. chimney is too small for large animals.
chimney is capped.
after listening to for awhile, i realize it is not in the firebox, where you put the wood, it is in the chamber above that. opening the door wont set it free.
chimney must be taken apart
lighting the fire(i really was kidding) wont BBQ it. it will suffocate from the smoke. and probably scream while doing so. if it gets stuck in the chimney, i will have the fire department here.
calling an exterminator is too expensive,i think local animal control only does dogs. and, i dont like government agencies in my house. especially since they dont know i have the stove.
here is my decision, right or wrong.
it must be a bird or a bat. it is quite now. i will open doors and windows, take down the chimney, and hope it leaves quietly.
i will have the camcorder running just in case im wrong .

Maybe it's a critter. Open the door slightly and look in with a flashlight. If you don't do that, then call animal control and say you are afraid there is some evil critter in your stove pipe thingy. I'm sure they'll come down for a small fee and get it for you.
Good luck! ^_^

Throw some cat food laced with bourbon in a bowl and put it in the stove for the sooty darling.
It'll hopefully eat the food and pass out- at which point you can get it out of your stove.
Or if all else fails open the door and run like he**

I was sitting in my living room once and heard scratching in our chimney. There was a rustling of the screen and a little red squirrel hopped out and ran straight up my pant leg. I didn't freak out because I knew him. We had rescued him from my husband's sister's house where her kids (who were monsters) were torturing it. We brought it home and took him way out back in our yard and into the woods. We tried several times to get him back to nature but he liked being hand fed tomatoes and nuts and stuff. We had to give him away to a friend because our cat was NOT pleased and he lived a full, spoiled life and died of old age.
Hope yours is as nice or that it is NOT a raccoon!!!

Leave the door closed. Light the stove. Prepare for a Bar-b-que dinner tonight!
Seriously, I would call the animal control folks in your town. It cound be a racoon, possum, or other wild critter and if so, could be carrying rabies or something else nasty.

The day the squirrel went berserk ... probably some mouse or climbing creature -- I doubt that it's huge, but I'd try to catch it in a gunny sack when opening the stove, just about any wild creature will keep you busy chasing it around the house.

What I would do melt some mature chedder and waft the smell towards the stove then put a bag round the stove door, open the stove and the creature will run out like a tasmanian devil trying to get at the cheese. once it runs out bag it and gag it and put it on ebay. you might make a fortune.

Ha ha ha oh wow .... well put a box or a live trap where the door opens and before you go to bed open the door.
Before you sleep, pray it really isn't a demon, and when you wake up take the box outside and let the critter go. It's probably scared, thirsty and hungry.

there really is no right answer for this. i used to have an old wood stove and reguardless of what could be in there, i open it and start the fire. have you any animals? or you can find a bat and stand on a chair, open the door, and as soon as it comes out, whack that sucker.

Wouldn't open it if i were you. Could be a rat! They can really get nasty and chase you. So heads up, call the exterminator, because if it would be puppy or it would make a whining noise. Same with a bird. But you're saying it's mad. So if you don't want to get bitten and turn into Cujo- call for help!

i've had birds, squirrels, and bats make nests in my chimney... definitely let whatever it is out, but do it smartly. Get someone to help you cover the opening so you don't have a loose animal in your house! Then see if it's hurt, and go from there.
Poor thing.
