Seeing as a can of the 'best' formula out there is roughly $30, and knowing how much better breastmilk is than any formula, how much do you think the same amount in breastmilk would run if sold in stores?

(I mean from mothers who are perfectly healthy and pre-approved to have their milk distributed. Breastmilk is breastmilk, no matter who it's from. That's why hospitals take donations of it.)

Definitely! I donate every few weeks because I pump every morning and I don't really ever NEED it...so I figure someone else might!

You sound like a great mom for wanting to donate breast milk. I always considered donating since I had soooo much milk coming out. I'm still breastfeeding my 15 month old daughter but stopped pumping several months ago. My supply is pretty low right now but is sufficient for her evenings and morning feedings. (I started 2 months ago switching to organic milk for her daily feedings.)
I'm of the same opinion as you that there is nothing better to feed your baby than breast milk. If I couldn't breastfeed then I would pay at least as much as the highest organic formula out there as it would still be better than organic.

The price will depend on the quantity thats available when somebody donates the Breast Milk. It's bound to be costly for many females wud see to it that their kids r fed milk properly and just incase a child doesn't like it's mothers milk then there wud be excess of milk which the mother can then donate. When u donate theres no point asking for money...or even thinking bout money coz ur doing some kind of social work. But if ur selling the Breast milk then yeah u sure wud c that u'd get maximum price.

When we c the best formula price is at $30 then the natural human Breast milk is bound to be costly so my judgement says it cud be anywhere from $80 to $125...or more depends on the availability.

Also the preservatives that need to be added to store the milk wud be a add on expense so all in all the charge wud be more then the artificial formula.

I think ur doing a very good thing coz in a way ur giving life to other deprived kids who r not lucky enuf to get milk from their biological mothers due to circumstantial problems.

lol.... um at least $100 per can

Someone told me once how much insurance companies pay for the banked stuff when prescribed... it was a lot, and by the 2 ounce serving!!!

this piece of an article on Prolacta is interesting:
8. If my milk is sold, how much will it be sold for?
--A portion of the milk that is not sent to Africa will be used to make human milk fortifier which is used for critically ill and premature infants. Prolacta produces the only fortifier made from 100% human milk for critically ill infants in the NICU. The fortifier is used to supplement a mother’s own milk. Like many products in the NICU, the cost of human milk fortifier is expensive. Human milk fortifier costs begin at approximately $100 per day per baby. http://thelactivist.blogspot.com/2007/06/update-on-prolacta-and-international.html

*** SOOO... if a little milk fortifier - a supplement - costs $100 per day, per baby - a week's worth of a can should cost at least $1000!!

wow! I didn't know they did that.

Dang that would be worth a lot. But then would other mothers be willing to buy that. Well maybe rich mothers who want the best for their baby and don't have time.

but sadly for the poor mothers who have bad breast milk and need alternatives and want the best it's not good. the price i mean.

Overall the Milk would be worth hell lot.

It seemes unethical to put a price on it. You can bet if someone could think to sell it, another could think to exploit it. I don't even want to think that some money-grabbing (most definitely a) man, putting women on an assembly line to 'mass produce' breastmilk.

To have a legally screened wet nurse for one week from a Los Angeles based company, costs over $1000. So I would say a little less since the woman isn't right there at your disposal! I think it is definitely worth it if I couldn't breastfeed my babes!

Priceless! But really.... are women pumping milk just for donation and not breastfeeding? That is amazing and this is the first time I've heard of it.

I would suppose if someone could make a buck they will do it and no doubt it would be higher than formula but it would have to have some preservatives and stuff added to it so it wouldn't be that natural by the time the consumer got it.

I have never heard of donating breastmilk but I guess why not?

Breastfeeding is great but it isn't for everyone. Not everyone can do it and not all babies take to it. Plus not everyones breastmilk is healthy. So I think it is up to the individual person to decide.

It's just too bad that more mommies don't breastfeed..it's the best thing out there for your baby,so why WOULDN"T you want to you know???
I nursed my first baby and will deffinently nurse this one (6 weeks preggo) also.
It's too bad that people waste their money on something out of a can when breast milk is just SO good for babies and it also comes with tons of benefits:
Helps mom slim down after birth
Gives a long-lasting bond between mommy and baby
Is free
Easy to prepare..lol
And its full of antibodies to help your baby grow strong and healthy!!!
I'd say breastmilk is So valuable that there just isn't a price to be put on it!!
