I was a Medic in the Air Force in the 70's.We had a joint rescue of 2 kids (around 11 or 12).
The had an inflatable raft that the were playing in on one of the bay's.
During this time the Corps of Engineers decided to "release" a dam from the brackesh waters after a storm.
These kids were caught in this rush and thrown out of their raft. The girl caught onto a bouy but the boy got washed down the bay.
A local sight seeing helocopter saw the boy and notified the rescue teams.
The boywas caught in the tide going thru a channel into the gulf.
An Air Force P.J. and Coast Guard diver went into the gulf to get him.He was more than 3 miles from where he was washed away.
It was then that he told the Cosat Guard his friend was lost in the bay.
I took the A.F. ambulance to a landing and meet up with a Coast Guard skip. The sun had set and we were looking but had noluck. The child had been lost for nearly 8 hours.
We were calling off the search for the night when a "tee-shirt" was found in the water.
We made one more pass thru the channel and passed the bouy and did not see her.We run up the bay a couple of miles and turned back.On the return as we were neaing the bouy the outline of the child was seen in the moonlight.
She was sunburned and dehydrated but other wise in good shape.Had see attempted the swim to the nearest point she would not have made the approxinately 1 mile as there was a breading ground for sharks just off the point.
