use long division of the area polynomial. or just factor it. if you factor you see that the answer needs to be either b or d. (because the x^2 coefeciant is 9, and you divide it by 3, you need three. ) since the constant in the big polynomial is negative, and the constant in the divosor is negative, you need a positive constant in one of the factors. so b is the answer. since lenght times width equals area... 3x+1*3x-1 equals the area.

where Area = 9x^2 - 18x - 7 and Width = 3x-7
A= WL
(9x^2-18x-7) = (3x-7)( L )
factor the left side of the equation
(3x-7) (3x+1) = (3x-7)( L )

f(x) = (3x - 7) (3x + 1)
the function f(x) is actually two two terms multiplied together, so if we assumed that the width of the area is (3x - 7), then (3x + 1) has to be the length.

So ask yourself what times (3x-7) will give you 9x^2 - 18 - 7?
