Is the AVG program that you can download for free any good, or should I spend money on a good program? What's the best one that's out there that's not too expensive?

AVG Free will do as good a job as any of the ones you can purchase.

You must understand though, that you should also be running a spyware program in conjunction with it. A good one is Spy Sweeper but it is $30 for the first year, and $19.95 each year afterwards.

You should also install and run AdAware (free) on your pc and either run it every couple of days or have it run when you start your pc.

All of these programs (AVG; AdAware; and Spy Sweeper) can be gotten at http://www.download.com

Hope this helps.

AVG works all right, but I recently stopped using anti-virus programs all together. Most vulnerabilities now are not viruses (which AVG detects) but rather worms, trojan horses, or social engineering attacks like phishing. Use the firewall which comes with Windows, keep your browsers up to date with the latest updates, and be vigilant about not visiting suspicious web sites. Some good anti-spyware software would help as well. In my experience and in my opinion, anti-virus software does nothing but slow your system down.

AVG is a very good program, in my opinion the best. You should actually try buying the full version. McAfee and Norton slows your computer down and are not that effective and they've also been loosing popularity to AVG. Your best bet would be AVG

AVG is one of the best free antivirus and I have one computer with it and all is ok, but my main computer has Norton on it and I have not hit a problem in the last 5yrs, the problem with this question is that you will get some that hate Norton, macafee etc and go for the free ones and some that only go for the named ones that cost. ctc

Avg is fine but not amazing. if your not gonna do anything fishy on ur computer or go to any malicious site... Avg should be perfectly fine. and when i say fishy i mean...piracy...porn...scam. but im sure you wont do any of those things..... anyway if u are you should get some major protection like spyware doctor or spy sweeper or ad-aware. or you should get a mac

Hi,

Freeware can be as good as commercial products, if not better. So don't feel bad about using it.

AVG is a pretty good freeware anti-virus program. You might also want to take a look at Avast.

Good luck!

Use Avast and back up your important documents. I am no expert, but there are probably more problems with loosing data from hard drive crashes and what not than from attacks. Avast will keep you safe, but you have to be wise-just burn important things to a disc.
