Every fall it seams as though, many more than usual, squirrels run in front of autos as if they are trying to get killed. They don't seem to try as hard to get out of the way as they do in the summer. Are they afraid they might not be strong enough to get through the winter so they just want to end it? Is it a Mother Nature thing? Only the strong will survive?

GEICO!

Actually, it is just that they are running around so much more, looking for nuts to hide, that it makes them easier targets. Same is true in spring, when they are running around looking for mates.

All the previous answers about squirrels minds being on other things are spot on but there is one additional factor. Over that past few months parents have been becoming increasingly intolerant of their young hanging about. Territory holders will become increasingly protective of their valuable resources and there are fewer places to hide with the canopy thinning. This means that non-territory holding squirrels may be driven to take risks to find a new space.

It's only the married ones.

They know that the swift end at the forces of the holy auto tyre is preferable to another winter cooped in the tree with the missus and pinkies.

Squirrel's thought pattern.....

Left...No Right...Outrun it...Right...No Left...look at it.. Run Right....No left...Right again...Wrong, try left.....

They are hilarious to watch try an escape an oncoming vehicle. I will always try to miss them....One honk of the horn and they go flying off the road. They are comical though.

Yea, it seems that way. They're preparing their food stock for winter.. I think it is because, like humans, when we are super busy, we make more mistakes. The more you do, the more mistakes you make. Thats why many people are not successfull, they are scared of being roadkill, but instead, they starve because they're unprepared.
