It's up to A Rod not the Yankees. A Rod can opt out his contract, but the Yankees can not trade him or force him to opt out, it's strictly up to A Rod

The Yankees will not release A-Rod, there is a condition in his contract that allows him to opt out of the contract at year seven of a ten year contract if he elects to do so. The contract says he must notify the Yankees within ten days after the world series is over or he will remain a Yankee at his current negotiated terms. A-Rod is in California with his agent now and they are , no doubt, discussing the possibility of going to the Angels at $30+ million per year and an 8-10 year contract. This would be about $6 million more than he would make with the Yankees next year.

A-Rod will sign a 12 year - 400 million dollar contract with the Yankees and help to open their new stadium in 2009. He will play until he's 44.

The Yankees can't release him. A-Rod with his contact can op out of the remaining portion of his contract and file for free agency. He could choose to do nothing a remain a Yankee for the next three years.

I don't think he will leave:

-A big portion of the Yankees.
-Best chances of him getting to his first World Series.

If he does leave:
-He will probably go to Chicago (Cubs or White sox)
-He COULD go to Colorado or maybe even Los Angeles Angles

So yes I do think it's possible for him to go to the NL.
