i have to write a philosophy paper on intuition, and one of the subjects I need to deal with is how zen knowledge is intuitive. I'm not exactly sure what zen knowledge is, and how it works in with intuition. any help would be greatly appreciated!

Lets just say in Soto Zen it is said knowledge is gained spontaneously through yelling HO and figuring out the not answers of koans.

It's a bit tricky to express 'Zen Knowledge' in words because the expression virtually means the knowledge that cannot be expressed in words.

Think baseball. The scientific or analytical knowledge of baseball is the rules. There are also a bunch of tips and suggestions like how to hold the bat and how to steal a base.
But the difference between knowing the tips and the rules and really knowing how to play the game is the Zen knowledge. It is the intuitive sense of how to play.

Have you ever heard two people tell the same joke, and one cracks you up, and the other just kills the thing? The difference is the Zen of comedy.

Ever hear the funny guy try and explain to the non funny guy, how to be funny? Or even worse, how to know what's funny?

The usual result is the comedian eventually throws up his hands and says "Buddy, if you don't know, I can't tell you."

That's Zen knowledge, the stuff that can't be expressed in words.

Edit: Yo Taoist, stick to the koans, that other sh1t will get you beat up in the hood.

Before we reach to zen knowledge, we have to understand how intuition comes. We have six senses. Sixth sense is mind. As eye picks up the form and ear picks up the sound in the same way mind picks up the purpose the utility. When we see a cup, eye picks up the form but mind picks the purpose of it. You know through mind that it can be used to drink liquid from. This is an example from a very simple thing. But if you go further, mind can pick up what other persons action mean. and so on and that is intuition. Now to use your mind properly you need mind training and that is meditation or zen knowledge.

ZEN means understanding your true self.
"What am I" That is a very important question.

A ZEN poem:

Baby birds leave the nest so easily!
But it's hard as hell
to get the shell
of a wise old tortoise.
