I am from India, Mumbai. we normally pay $12-$15 for food per day if we eat out and tryout reasonably hygienic food at good ambiance.

First week of this month I had two business visitors from Boston, I took them out for dinner and lunch in 5Stars... It did cost about $120 that includes some Australian wine, Indian beer and full course meal for 4 people.

Your travel agency is a cheat.

First things first is that you should never trust hotel meals. You don't know how cheap india is. I was grown up in India. When they mean they will give one meal per day, the mean maybe a pastry and a cup of tea (chaa), and their cup of tea is smaller than what a toddler in America plays with as a toy tea cup. Food is cheap in India, but you have to choose the right foods from the right places. Never go to a street food shop, as they are very unhygienic. They call street food shops (laari) in India. Now for buying clothes, you can always bargain for clothes. The cheapest for clothes I have seen is $1 for an amazing colorful sari. If you are looking for indian traditional clothes, then street shopping is the way to go. If you are looking for fashion, then the malls are the way to go. Whatever you do, never go clubbing in India. You might think that India is simple and most are in poverty, but when you go to clubs, it is totally different. There are so many drunkards and rapists in clubs, that I would never go. The only reason why I would go to a club in India if there was a special party booked with no outsiders. Otherwise, never. Now for travelling. If you want to travel to cities close to mumbai, including sightseeing, then you should go with a travel agency. To total your costs lets see Food: $5 a day, so $210. Sightseeing/Travelling: I would say you should have a good $300 for traveling. Clothes: if you mean lots of clothes, then like $150 (bring lots of bags). Clubbing: $0 (again, please don't go clubbing ) so that brings us a total to $660. But I would bring $750 because of transportation. So $750 is about 37,500 rupees, which is the indian currency. Bring 38,000 though. (just incase) One thing to make sure is that never go to unknown people, and watch out for beggars. They are so cruel, they would cut off your hand and run away if they saw 50 rupees in your hands. 50 rupees = $1. Get the picture!!!

It looks like someone is pulling a fast one on you or you will be eating in a five star resort or you are going to feed a whole garrison for that amount. Wonder which travel agency told you this.

Prices differ from restaurant to restaurant but I think that in Delhi you would spend about 5 $ per person per meal at a reasonably decent place.

Rates differ according to the food you eat... i.e. vegetarian, non-vegetarian, seafood, etc. and rates also differ from state to state in India.

If you are coming to Goa and need any info from here, contact me.....

It depend which typwe of Hotel and what type of food you want to eat. A moderate meal in a fairly decent Hotel in Delhi Cith will not cost more than 5 or 6 dollars. However, if you want liquor etc. the cost will go up.

LOL you will need maybe a few bucks. My father has been for his job a few times. And the first time he went. He went out to eat with his friends and the whole meal for like 5 people was like 8 dollars including the tip. If I remember correctly. If you tip someone like 50cents, they will be at your beckon call for like a week.
