Prejudices are passed down from family, community and media. I believe that they are reinforced when people accept their stereotypes and live by them.

Prejudice is an entire branch of study in social psychology. I could literally go for days on the subject, but I'll just pick off a few pieces.
One is the obvious answer of ignorance. If you don't know about the other culture, then is becomes easy to hate them.
Two would be, if you meet someone of that particular group, they confirm your stereotype. Anyone who does not confirm your stereotype would be an exception to the rule and therefore an abnormality.
Three would be coming into contact with many people who have the same views as you of the group. This build upon one anothers hatred and eventually it actually grows because of it.
Hope I helped a little. It's been a little while since I took social psych.

I live in Iowa and we hired George Raveling to coach the Iowa basketball teem. He lasted a couple years, and had to endure criticism of everything he did. I actually had older friends that called him a pretty good n***** when we won and a damn n****** when lost. This was from people that are now in their 70's a generation ahead of mine. We didn't call him that , but these peoples grand kids heard it and that' how prejudice gets reinforced

one way is: the media selectively reports based on stereotypes & prejudice which reinforces people's own stereotypes. People think they are right in their prejudices because that's what they're seeing on tv, etc.
for example: ethnic minorities are misrepresented in the news. they are usually portrayed in negative roles (crime). for example, say you hear a news story about a black man who robbed a store. the story is usually portrayed as a warning of an increasing trend... it sends the message: watch out for black men- they are going around robbing stores! that feeds into prejudices/ideas that black men are more dangerous than white men, etc. On the flip side, when the news story is showing someone in a positive light, that someone is usually white.

Mostly by ignorance. Then fear. Although I must say today I feel it has to do with selling papers and having higher ratings. It is just shameful. A good question would be to ask, if everyone was blind would there be prejudice?

Since it is pre-judging, no reinforcement is needed.
You are working with a foregone conclusion. It doesn't matter what the truth is.
