Why is that stupid song so popular amongst straight people? I fail to understand how celebrating through song the story of a husband and wife writing and answering personal ads for a tryst/affair is remotely romantic at all. To me it shows lack of committment, lack of character, and lack of good communication skills. Am I wrong for feeling this way?

no, your not wrong. I didn t know it was that popular among "straight" people. I am straight and its not my fave song, but it is good to sing along too.

but frankly, I could use a good drink and someone to pay attention to me right me now. Since my husband doesnt, cant or wont... I guess the fantasy of him coming on to me like he use to would be nice though.
A vacation away from life would nice too

I am so lonely.

Thank you for the hug hunny. :)

I like splashing in rain puddles. Not much into pina coladas though.

By the way, I agree with you about the point of the song too.

I was tired of my lady, we'd been together too long.
Like a worn-out recording, of a favorite song.
So while she lay there sleeping, I read the paper in bed.
And in the personals column, there was this letter I read:

"If you like Pina Coladas, and getting caught in the rain.
If you're not into yoga, if you have half-a-brain.
If you like making love at midnight, in the dunes of the cape.
I'm the lady you've looked for, write to me, and escape."

I didn't think about my lady, I know that sounds kind of mean.
But me and my old lady, had fallen into the same old dull routine.
So I wrote to the paper, took out a personal ad.
And though I'm nobody's poet, I thought it wasn't half-bad.

"Yes, I like Pina Coladas, and getting caught in the rain.
I'm not much into health food, I am into champagne.
I've got to meet you by tomorrow noon, and cut through all this red tape.
At a bar called O'Malley's, where we'll plan our escape."

So I waited with high hopes, then she walked in the place.
I knew her smile in an instant, I knew the curve of her face.
It was my own lovely lady, and she said, "Oh, it's you."
And we laughed for a moment, and I said, "I never knew"..

"That you liked Pina Coladas, and getting caught in the rain.
And the feel of the ocean, and the taste of champagne.
If you like making love at midnight, in the dunes of the cape.
You're the love that I've looked for, come with me, and escape."

"If you like Pina Coladas, and getting caught in the rain.
And the feel of the ocean, and the taste of champagne.
If you like making love at midnight, in the dunes of the cape.
You're the love that I've looked for, come with me, and escape."

Edit: I have always thought he would meet a nice guy who has pinas colossus...

Yes, Dearest, and I wouldn't have laughed when I saw him/her in the bar; but remember that was at the tail end of the Me-Generation and the casual sex was just about ready to hit the toilet (proverbially so) when HIV/AIDS reared an ugly head (ooo another bad and please forgive me pun)
The song was just an overview of something that had started in the 60's and was ending with a gasp.

OMG!!! I LOVE this song. I find it more to be about re-discovering your partner than about having an affair.

... and by the way, I'm a lesbian.

lol..that song sucks. But c'mon, "popular amongst straight people"? More like popular amongst middle aged people with no inclination towards rhythm. lol, it's horrible.

I hear ya. But it does kind of make me want to dance when I hear it. I have a friend, he's gay, that is simply in LOVE with Rupert Holmes. Why? I have no idea.
